English and Literacy

English & Literacy at Bradford Forster Academy

In Year 7 this year we are starting students off on their journey to prepare for their GCSEs in English Language and Literature.  Students will complete work looking at both Paper 1 and Paper 2 skills for their GCSE in English language as well as building skills necessary for them to be successful students of Literature.

In term one, under the theme of ‘Magic and Adventure’, students have looked at texts and analysed how a writer has used language and structure effectively and written their own descriptive pieces using a range of engaging techniques.  In the winter term we will study a novel, evaluate how characters are created and used and how effective narrative devices like setting and narrators have been.  Students will complete their own non-fiction writing based on the issues that are in the novel.  In the summer term we will consider ‘The World Around Us’ and make connections between a range of texts and compare how they work.

To get more information about the GCSE, you can visit the AQA website.  The GCSEs we are planning to study is AQA English Language (8700) ad English Literature (8702).  Alternatively, you can contact Mr Schack.

In Year 8 this year we are continuing to support students on their journey to prepare for their GCSEs in English Language and Literature.  Students will complete work looking at both Paper 1 and Paper 2 skills for their GCSE in English language as well as building skills necessary for them to be successful students of Literature.

In term 1, under the banner of ‘Crime and Mystery’, students have studied a range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, from the 19th Century to the modern, relating to this theme.  Students have developed their ability to tackle questions on both Paper 1 and Paper 2 and are developing skills required to be analytical readers and fluent and confident writers.  In term 2 students will study a novel and explore some of the moral and social aspects that arise from this.  Students will study structure and narrative techniques as well as evaluating the writer’s effectiveness.  They will also produce a range of writing around issues or elements from the novel.  In the summer term students will explore the literary canon and make links and comparisons  between significant writers in history and their works.

To get more information about the GCSE, you can visit the AQA website.  The GCSEs we are planning to study is AQA English Language (8700) ad English Literature (8702).  Alternatively, you can contact Mr Schack.
